EVERY BOOK NEEDS AN EDITOR
If you are writing a book, or if you’ve completed one, it may be time to
think about editing. This is true of fiction and nonfiction. Whether
you want to self-publish, or try to big traditional publishers, every
book needs an editor.
In the old publishing world most book editors worked for publishing
companies, and you had to get their approval to get your book published.
Thousands of authors sent in books they’d written. The editors rejected
most, asked for changes in some, and approved only a few.
Today’s publishing companies employ fewer and fewer editors, and those
overworked editors seldom ask for changes—and they still turn down most
of the books authors send them. Even when they accept a book, they often
suggest that a writer hire his or her own freelance editor for
everything from critiques to line-by-line editing, and sometimes even
for the final proofing before publication. More and more publishing
companies insist that a book be ready for publication when it arrives in
their mailbox. They have to do this to compete. Also far more writers
are having success with self-publishing. Most of these successful
authors have hired freelance editors to help them shape and improve
their work. It’s the one thing that hasn’t changed: Every book still
needs an editor.
That’s where I come in. I’m an experienced editor and a published
writer. I love working with words. I’ve written, edited and published
fiction and nonfiction of all kinds for newspapers, magazines, journals,
and book publishers. My own stories and articles have appeared in
places as diverse as Twilight Zone Magazine, Playgirl, and The
Washington Post.
I cannot guarantee your book’s success, but I can improve its chances. I
am an editor first and foremost, and I will not want any part of the
ownership of your book. Your book is yours, and I want it to stay that
way. If you want a free sample of editing, send a short section from
your book. I’ll edit 500 words for free. If you tell me the length of
the whole manuscript, I can give you options and prices. If you like
what you see, you can hire me. I hope to hear from you.
