About Me
"Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole." ~Roger
Caras
Welcome to Jean and Ray's Canine Cottage!
After growing up with dogs as a child, I wasn't in a place to have dogs
of my own, either living on campus or in homes that did not allow pets.
Since beginning graduate school, I have been dog sitting on and off for
seven years. During this time, I have dog sat for anxious dogs, hyper
dogs, small dogs, large dogs, puppies, seniors, and so on. I am
currently working part-time while I work on my dissertation and my
husband works on his Bachelor's degree from home. My husband, Ray, is my
bow-wow backup. While I am the primary canine caregiver and home
Thursday through Sunday, he is the cottage caretaker and working at home
at all hours.
Our dogs:
Ray and I have two dogs. Our Texas dog, Gorilla, moved to the northeast
with my husband in 2014. He is a very mellow, neutered black lab mix
almost 8 years old. Our newest family member, Niblet, is a German
shepherd mix about 6 months old who is typically found either looking
for the next new, exciting thing to do or passed out on the floor.
Why we dog sit:
In the past, I have done dog sitting primarily to help close friends and
be close to dogs when I couldn't have any of my own. Now, my husband
and I are looking for more opportunities to socialize our pup so that
she becomes a very well-behaved girl as she grows and so both our pups
have some more pack play time. While the extra income is always
appreciated for two students, we are keeping our rates low, with part of
it going to charity, so we can focus on what's important - providing a
safe, happy place for pooches to have fun with playmates.
About our home:
My husband and I live in beautiful West Brattleboro where we rent a
2-story house. We are fortunate to have a large, beautiful yard situated
against a huge expanse of forest and wooded areas with miles of hiking
trails just up the hill from our yard. The brook runs under the road
just down the street, and we've been known to play fetch in the water
with our happy-go-lucky pup and our "I wish I was dry" lab mix.
Regarding special needs:
My husband and I are open to dog sitting for any kind of dog. We are
accustomed to dogs with anxiety and/or high energy needs and would love
the opportunity to help you and your dog feel comfortable while you are
away. If your dog watched too many stranger danger ads and enters into
guard dog mode with people or other dogs, let us know and we're happy to
do a specialized introduction to make your pup less like Grumpy and
more like Happy. In addition, if you would like our help doing any
doggie training while you are away (no jumping, sit, lay down, heel,
stay, fetch, etc.), we're happy to help. We are also happy to help if
your dogs have special medical needs or require medication. Our own dogs
are so well cared for that they have their very own couch cushion for a
bed, and yours will be just like another family member.
Regarding exercise:
Exercise is important for happy pups! Both of our dogs get vigorous
exercise every day via walks and play time. When the weather isn't
cooperating, we either walk in the woods under the shelter of the pines
or we walk on the treadmill together inside. Since we have a young pup,
we are outside many times per day (at least 6). We often go for hikes
(we even made our own little trails in addition to all the maintained
ones), and the pups will lounge around outside while we do chores or
gardening.
Regarding multiple dogs:
While we are open to dog sitting for multiple people at once, this would
only be with the consent of both dog owners. Your pet's safety is our
number one concern, so if the pooches don't play nice, they will get
extra walks together to help create that we're-in-the-same-pack
mentality. Worst case scenario, the dogs will be separated for their own
safety.
If you have any questions or concerns, no matter how small, please contact us.

Raves from My Customers
I have
6 reviews on my Rover profile. Check out what these customers had to say:
★★★★★ "I can not rave enough about Jean and Ray! My dog
has separation issues and they handled him with grace and know-how. I
could not have felt more at ease leaving my sweet (and sometimes needy)
guy in their capable hands. The daily updates and pictures were such a
treat! Jean's friendly and clear way of communicating made things easy
to arrange and really set my mind at easy. I highly recommend Jean and
Ray!" --KariLyn M.
★★★★★ "Jean and Ray took very good care of our dog, Elke,
once again. Jean is very good at keeping me informed with photos and
updates of their activities. Elke seems happy there and well taken care
of. Jean even includes a little gift bag and a "progress report" when I
pick up Elke. I would highly recommend them!" --Michele F.
